Somatotypes: You Can’t Alter Your Genetics But You Can Alter Your Life Style.

Your body is the sum of your genetics and your life style. You can’t alter your genetics but you can alter your life style. How you look can be profoundly effected by how you carry out your life. You may have been born with the genes of an Arnold Schwarzenegger, but if your life style has been more in line with Bart Simpson then you will never be a Mr./Miss Universe. On the other hand you may have the genes that are inclined towards fat, but if you control your diet and participate in an exercise programme then you will look a lot better than the previous example.

Biologists place everybody into one of three body types. In practice it is a little more complicated than this in that there are divisions within the three types, but for the normal person interested in building a better physique we will stick with the basics. The scientific name for putting us all into groups is called putting us into “somatotypes.” (“somato” refers to the body, and I think that you know what “types” means.)

The Endomorph

The endomorph was born with the type of body that is inclined towards roundness and softness. This person will be prone towards having a prominent abdomen unless he/she works out to shape and tone it. Muscles will not show as they may have a layer of fat over them. This person will probably be quite strong. There will be a tendency to gain fat easily so diet will have to be controlled. If this person works out they can turn this burliness to great advantage and look quite terrific.

The Mesomorph

The mesomorph is the lucky one. This is the person that was born with the genes that make it easier to develop a good physique. This person is naturally muscular, with minimum fat. If you weren’t, born a mesomorph you can never become one, but with exercise and a good diet you can look like one.

The Ectomorph

The ectomorph is typically the lean person. He/she tends to be narrow and thin. Ectomorphs are often quite tall. These are the people that seem to be able to eat anything without putting on weight. These people can build up an impressive physique also, just impressive in a different way to the other two somatotypes.

In the end we can say that there is no one perfect body type. You were all born with the capability to shape yourself into something terrific. All it takes is a healthy life style, exercise and a good diet. You can’t have the best body in the world, but you can have a dam good one.
