Running For Big People

When we watch marathons on the TV we get the impression that everybody that runs is a scrawny stick insect. This of course isn’t true – big people can run and lots of them do.

When we watch marathons on the TV we get the impression that everybody that runs is a scrawny stick insect. This of course isn’t true – big people can run and lots of them do. There are however a number of things that the larger runner has to take account of in order to make their running more enjoyable, and not a turn off.

If you are a big person because you are involved in a weight training programme then you will probably know what you are about and have probably planned your running schedule. On the other hand, if you are a big person because you have eaten too many pies and you want to do something about it these are some of the things that you should take into consideration

See your doctor

Any one taking up a running programme for the first time should see their doctor. The doctor will be pleased that you are doing something about your weight problem and will give you good advice.

Choose good running shoes

I know that designer usually looks better but bright flashy shoes will not do the job. You need shoes that will absorb the shock through good cushioning and are durable. The heavier you are the more important a good running shoe is. You should get advice from an expert.

Drink plenty of water

Fit people sweat more than unfit people, and fit heavy people sweat more again. Large people in general sweat less efficiently than smaller people so make sure that you keep yourself well tanked up with water. The recommendation is 150ml. every quarter hour or so. Just remember big guys and galls need more.

Food

Big people use more energy i.e. burn more calories more quickly than smaller people. If you are using your running as an aid to slimming be careful not to diet too strongly. If you starve yourself you could find yourself fainting out on the street or on your treadmill.

Lubrication

There is nothing that will put you off your running more than the discomfort of having sore skin caused by rubbing. Make sure that you smear your delicate parts, and the parts of your body that rub against clothing when you are running with Vaseline or a special sports lubricant.
