Preventing High Blood Pressure
High Blood Pressure Prevention
Having high blood pressure can put you at a higher risk of stroke, and heart and kidney disease so preventing high blood pressure is obviously in your own interest and can benefit your health immensely. If you are battling high blood pressure there are many ways to lower it and prevent yourself from developing it again. If at all possible the best way to prevent high blood pressure is to make some lifestyle changes. Non of us wants to change but a few changes now can add years to your life.
Do you smoke?
Smoking can raise your blood pressure so it is sensible to cut back or even better quit altogether. There are many aids that can help you quit smoking.
Do you drink?
Drinking vast amounts of alcohol will also raise your blood pressure so try to cut back to a drink or two a day.
Are you physically active?
Are you physically active on a daily basis? Getting at least thirty minutes of exercise a day has been proven to lower and maintain a healthy blood pressure level. If you cannot set aside thirty minutes all at one time do ten minute intervals. I do mini sessions. When I am waiting for the kettle to boil I can get in about 200 or so bodyweight squats for example. Press ups to failure take no more than a minute. Doing these at odd minutes during the day all adds up to help you to your thirty minutes. When you take the dog out try to go a little faster. It will do you and the dog some good. Being active doesn’t necessarily mean having a training plan. You can just fit in a little at odd moments during the day. You are not going to develop an athletes body, but it will help to keep your blood pressure under control.
Start a healthier diet.
Did you know salt increases your blood pressure dramatically? Limit your intake of salt or substitute it with other seasonings. There are so many different seasonings available you should have no trouble finding one that you really like.
It is also important to add plenty of vegetables and fresh fruits into your diet. This will also help lower and control your blood pressure. Try to stay away from fatty foods as well.
Being overweight can have a major impact on your blood pressure. Losing as little as ten pounds can significantly reduce your blood pressure. Once you lose ten pounds you will see how easily you can lose more and you will notice how much better and healthier you feel. Not to mention that your blood pressure levels will decrease.
Do you have a stressful job or life?
Try to do away with as much stress as you possibly can. Nobody can avoid all the causes of stress in life but you may need to find something that helps you relax and de-stress. Meditation might work wonders for you. There are other articles on this site giving advice on reducing stress and on leading a less stressful life.
There are certain things you cannot avoid that have an effect on high blood pressure. Your race: African Americans are at a higher risk. If you are older than fifty-five you are at risk as well and unfortunately you cannot make yourself younger.
If you have a family history of high blood pressure, you need to look into early prevention. Knowing about your family history can give you a head start. Even if you do not have high blood pressure now, but there has been problems within the family you are at risk of eventually developing it. But that doesn’t have to happen. Early prevention can keep your blood pressure down.
If at all possible stay away from drugs and painkillers as they can cause high blood pressure. Some prescription medications can cause high blood pressure such as: nasal decongestants, anorexia drugs, steroids, antidepressants, oral contraceptives and cold medicines. If you are taking any of these and are having problems with your blood pressure levels, be sure your doctor is aware that you are taking them.
Talk with your doctor if you have any questions or of any concerns that you may have. Your doctor will be pleased that you are taking an interest in your own health and will be more than pleased to help you. No question is too silly if the answer puts your mind at rest.
Always remember it is never too early to start taking better care of your health, and looking after your blood pressure is a good place to start.
